One of the First New Orleans Book Deals

Publishers Marketplace: Deal Search Results: “New Orleans Times-Picayune city editor Jed Horne’s insider’s narrative account of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, locating its roots in the culture and of the city of New Orleans and in the national of oil, homeland security, poverty, and race relations, and following the initial reconstruction efforts and investigation into the government’s response to the crisis, to Tim Bartlett at Random House, by Claudia Menza of the Menza-Barron Agency (world).”

This sounds like something of a snoozefest. The Times-Picayune itself has shown the way with a much more nimble “blogging” approach.

Iran Set to Give Nuclear Info to Others - Yahoo! News

Iran Set to Give Nuclear Info to Others - Yahoo! News: “UNITED NATIONS -
Iran is willing to provide nuclear technology to other Muslim states, Iran’s hard-line president said Thursday. Hours later, European nations renewed an offer of economic incentives if the mideast nation would halt its uranium enrichment.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the comment after talking with Turkey’s prime minister during a gathering of world leaders at the
United Nations, Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency said.

Ahmadinejad repeated promises that Iran will not develop nuclear weapons, the report said. Then he added: ‘Iran is ready to transfer nuclear know-how to the Islamic countries due to their need.’”

When the wishful thinking ends.

WaPo Poll: New Orleans Pop to Shrink

Some of the Uprooted Won’t Go Home Again: “Fewer than half of all New Orleans evacuees living in emergency shelters here said they will move back home, while two-thirds of those who want to relocate planned to settle permanently in the Houston area, according to a survey by The Washington Post, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health.”>

This is good news for both New Orleans and Houston.

An extremely useful reference from Edward Olson.

Half-way through: HELL IS UPON US

Half-way-thru Review: HELL IS UPON US,

As the title suggests, one of the most valuable things about HELL IS UPON US: D-Day in the Pacific, Saipan to Guam, June-August 1944 by Victor Brooks (Da Capo) is the original“frame” it puts around these bitter but relatively little known island campaigns, justly putting them on a level with D-Day in the Atlantic. Another nice thing about the book is the effortless way that the author handles the switch in scales from the “macro” – Allied grand strategy – to the “micro” – the confined battle fields of Tarawa and Saipan – and back out again to the “theater” level carrier battle of the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.

The author does a good job with political and social aspects of military life – he provides an excellent explanation of why the Marines on Saipan thought the Army’s 27th Division was a collection of political hacks from the New York National Guard. He is on less sure ground when it comes to technical details of military hardware –he tries to explain why Lee’s fast battleships were relatively ineffective at shore bombardment without ever mentioning that they were carrying armor-piercing instead of bombardment rounds. Also, on at least two occasions he uses the word “decimate” in its broad modern (i.e. incorrect) sense. I wish the copy editors at Perseus had seen fit to fix that. All in all, good stuff — I am looking forward to finishing this useful contribution to modern understanding of the Pacific War.

HBP Chapter 21 re-read

HBP Chapter 21 Re-read

In a nutshell: The Unknowable Room isn’t kidding around, it’s really unknowable.

I found it interesting that Harry disagreed in his essay with Snape on the best way to tackle dementors.  Another hint that Harry’s unique combination of perception and experience makes him highly advanced at DADA.  I’ll go out on a limb and say that he’s going to wind up as the DADA teacher at Hogwarts.  (I don’t see him as patient enough to be a Headmaster.)

Am I the only one who thinks it’s a bit of overkill to send Mundungus (or anyone) to Azkaban?  The dementors ought to be considered cruel and unusual punishment.

When the trio is reading the newspaper it mentions that Octavius Pepper has vanished – I can’t recall, do we ever find ought who this was?

I would like to have seen Neville’s reaction to the nine-year-old boy who was Imperius Cursed into trying to kill his grandparents. (And, btw, why exactly is a 9yo who was Imperiused under arrest at all?)

Snape provides another refresher on Inferi, I feel sure they will eventually figure more prominently.

I like that Myrtle sees (Draco) as human, sensitive, bullied. Draco is such a figure of evil in the books (as differentiated from the movies or in fanfic)  that it’s good to remember he’s still a youth.

Harry scaring Goyle is hilarious.  I hope the movie shows Goyle turn back into himself, the joke is even funnier with the visual of the fairly humungous and talented actor Joshua Hardman.

Tonks’ appearance here feels awfully random. It’s as if she wandered in from the green room and forgot she was on stage.

“Goading Myrtle seemed to have put fresh heart into Ron.”   Tonks is “cracking up.”  Again with the sarcasm, Ron.  I’m getting tired of it.  Apparently so was JKR as she gives Hermione a priceless score at the end of the chapter, tweaking Ron about his joke falling flat in front of Madam Rosmerta.
