John Scalzi, Tor
A significant improvement over his debut novel, OLD MAN’S WAR. Scalzi has ditched the annoying protagonist of OLD MAN’S WAR (annoying not because he was an old geezer, but because he was in advertising) and is focusing on the third human species in his Colonial world: the creche-born Special Forces, or “Ghost Brigades.” A good action story and a surprisingly thoughtful meditation on the meaning of identity. It will be interesting to see what Scalzi does next.
