The new cover of this Tor reissue is more restrained than

this old Baen cover:

I have an even more egregious paperback somewhere, but can’t find a scanned image online.

I finally got around to reading this book. It is composed of three novellas that were published in ANALOG from 1966 to 1968. I think I had only read one of them, the first, so I especially enjoyed the last 2/3 of the book!
The first third of the book is an absolute delight for anyone who loves Golden Age science fiction and the John Campbell era of ANALOG; the plot revolves around the 700-year-old speculative fiction magazine FANTASIE whose staff sails around the island world of Tu on a giant ship.
The last two thirds of the book are darker as Vinge explores just how frightening it is to have a superwoman amongst us. Tatja Grimm is lonely, distant, manipulative, and alien. There are a lot of flashes of the future Vinge
Highly recommended for anyone who is revisiting Vernor Vinge with the publication of RAINBOW’S END, or who simply enjoys classic SF.
