Another Star of Courage recipient is Michael Brown. He was driving behind a truck in Langwarrin, Victoria, on March 23, 2005, when it hit a station wagon.
In spite of a back condition which forces him to use crutches, he hurried to the burning car to find a mother and baby trapped inside.
“I saw a station wagon flying backwards in the air,” he said.
“I couldn’t get there fast enough on two crutches so I threw one away.
He said the woman was screaming “my baby! my baby!”.
“That still goes through my mind sometimes,” he said.
With the help of Queenslander Ian Souter and Victorian Stuart Gibbs, who also received bravery medals, Mr Brown grabbed the infant carrier the baby was inside.
While the others tried to put out the fire, Mr Brown then broke the back of the driver’s seat and carried the woman to safety.
I love stories like this.
