Quit excusing Komodo Dragons and other animals that regularly hunt humans

Tourism Indonesia - Komodo dragon mauls boy to death on Indonesia’s Komodo island

A rare Komodo dragon has mauled a boy to death on an eastern Indonesian island that is part of the Komodo national park, a local media report said Monday.

The 9-year-old Mansur was having a toilet stop in a bush area on Komodo island on Saturday when he was attacked by the Komodo dragon, Jakarta’s leading Kompas daily reported.

A coyote has been seen in the woods recently near our son’s school. The information that was sent home repeated the standard line–”coyote attacks are extremely rare”–but it was also recommended that unsupervised children stay out of the woods.

On this subject, the best book is MAN THE HUNTED, by Donna Hart, which shows that, in fact, a great many animals hunt human beings when they have the opportunity. It’s time we all stopped talking about how animals “rarely attack unless provoked” and get real: even the slightest chance of a wild animal attacking a human child is totally unacceptable. Nature is cute and all but as a parent I want it well walled off in (very large) national parks.

Incidentally, this post is a test of the power of Google Hot Trends, where at the moment “komodo dragon” is ranked #31.
