Making Money by Terry Pratchett

wfzimmerman's review: "I was absolutely thrilled when this arrived the evening before I was leaving on a three-day business trip. What perfect timing! What a splendid antidote to airport boredom! It did the job, too, as my outbound trip was terrific. I finished reading the book in the hotel room the first night. Unfortunately, I didn't have any other new Pratchetts to read on the flight home, which was horrendous with a two-hour runway delay followed by a turbulent flight. The second in the Moist von Lipwig series is very good Pratchett, perhaps not quite his best but still very enjoyable. The protagonists' gf Adora Belle spends too much time off-screen, and the villain is too delusional to be quite as frightening as possible. Must reading for Pratchett fans, but not the book to start with."
Doubleday (2007), Hardcover, 352 pages
tags: first UK edition, collecting author's complete works, Pratchett, Discworld, fantasy, economics

The Burglar Who Thought He Was Bogart by Lawrence Block

wfzimmerman's review: "I wish I had the time to watch every Bogart movie referenced in this book. This cries out for a "new media" treatment! Good stuff, but not the best "Burglar" or Block."

Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein

wfzimmerman's review: "LOCUS Magazine ran a remarkably mush-minded appreciation of Heinlein on the 100th anniversary of his birth. The plain truth is that much of Heinlein's later writing is now plainly embarrassing and we should not want it to stand the test of time. The same is not true of [[STARSHIP TROOPERS]]. This is still a terrific book and its brand of tough-minded ecological militarism is still much in need as the world struggles with the implications of having 6.5 billion "boss primates" underfoot."

The Artist’s Guide to GIMP Effects by Michael J. Hammel

wfzimmerman's review: "A must book as I use GIMP (an open source Photoshp) for all my book covers."
No Starch Press (2007), Paperback, 360 pages

The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power by Daniel Yergin

wfzimmerman's review: "I found this for $2.00 at a rummage sale at the pharmacy at Saline St. Joseph Hospital in Saline, Michigan. It's a first UK S&S edition. The ISBN is the same as the S&S U.S. edition, and no printing #s have been removed, but the price is lbs 20 net and the cover is distinctive. In any event, for $2.00 this was a great buy, as this is still a definitive history of its subject."
Simon & Schuster (1991), Hardcover, 912 pages

Diasporas in Conflict: Peacemakers or Peace Wreckers? by Hazel and Stares, Paul Smith

wfzimmerman's review: "A broad look at diasporas, but falls prey to the "case study" disease that infects most academic treatment of this global issue."

Dr. Seuss Goes to War: The World War II Editorial Cartoons of Theodor Seuss Geisel by Richard H. Minear, Art Spigelman

wfzimmerman's review: "A really cool book. Dr. Seuss's drawings look the same when he is drawing Hitler as when he is drawing Horton or the Cat in the Hat. It's also gratifying that Seuss was so right so early about the Fascist threat..."
New Press (1999), Hardcover, 272 pages

Transit Maps of the World by Mark Ovenden

wfzimmerman's review: "A beautiful book. I love the TOC which is laid out like a subway map. Unfortunately, at first glance, one problem is that transit maps of the world tend to be a lot like one another..."
