Barack Obama’s book, “The Audacity of Hope,” has a catchy title. It has a taste of bravery mixed with full confidence. There is nothing Pollyanna about this. I won’t support everything he tells, but he’s our president, and then for me, he inspires confidence. Which can do more for any region than any number of backroom deals. Hope gives us energy, and energy sustains us through trying times. Boy, we’ve had them. I’m from West Texas, and I did not vote for Bush. When McCain ran against Obama, I was a citizen of Arizona, but I gave audacious hope a chance. The fight for progress and laying the foundations of prosperity isn’t over. I’ve come across the quips of those that don’t think Obama is capable of it. But step back a second. Would anyone have most of us fail only to tarnish the star of an incumbent for whom they didn’t vote? Attempting to keep our priorities straight, let’s work together with our president and build our future.

I have a short novel that is the first of a series called “The Sense of Sight”, It is a thriller with a supernatural touch to it. It’s about a girl who lives with her grandparents, because her parents passed away shortly after she was born. When she turns 16 some weird dreams have been haunting her. Megan’s grandmother has the answers but dies two days after her BD. Her grandmother gives her a heirloom necklace as a gift. Now she is left to discover on her own what is happening. Filled with excitement and thrills, Megan will be through gauntlet of trouble and turmoil, leading up to a final realization that may lead to her unraveling.

See, this works for you, within your discipline; but I read journals in a wide range of disciplines, and I find it difficult to remember all the prefixes. We all learn scientific notation in high school, and then are taught to unlearn it. Why?

I don’t see what’s so difficult about saying “five times 10^15″ and being sure that everyone understands you, relative to saying “5 petabytes” and not being quite sure that everyone remembers the difference between a petabyte and a terabyte. I’m sure you’ve noticed, also, that a lot of people have trouble really understanding the magnitudes of things.

Scientific notation puts everyone on the same page.

In my field of work, it would be cumbersome to talk about data transfer, for instance, in terms of exponents. Talking about petabytes is routine, and it would be frustrating to have to say “ten to the fifteenth bytes” or worse, “one point one two five eight nine nine nine one times ten to the fifteenth bytes” if using base-2 exponents. Cute idea, but a blanket guideline is overly restrictive.

I am an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I actually DO write on a book about Typography, and I already have a publisher. BUT: I would love to contribute. My own book is about type-setting per se, but I have talked at the TypeCon, at the international conference on the book in washington DC, and, last month at the NC state University about PROCESS and typography. I do further write essays (in german, for Germany) about type and creative process.
