This is one of the most exciting times in the history of science (and, therefore, humanity …) In every field, mind-boggling breakthroughs are a daily occurrence. I love science and I want to publish books that bring news about science to the reading public, and I have an angle that may work well for some science journalists and authors.
I own an independent publishing company (NimbleBooks.com) that has had success publishing 60-to-120 page, color illustrated, printed books about naval and military topics. At this length and a price of between $17 and $30 the books are as profitable per copy to author and publisher as a traditional format book and, of course, they are much easier and “nimbler” to produce. The “takeaway” for prospective authors is that this is an alternative channel that can readily be used for “dual-purposing” other writing (blogs and periodical articles). I would not pretend that this is a way to get rich, but many of my authors earn revenues sufficient to buy, say, a nifty piece of consumer electronics each month.
This is a new field for Nimble Books–I am just beginning to publish books about science–and I have found that it is important to build up a “critical mass” of related titles on a topic. So I would like to publish 3 to 6 “nimble” science books in the latter half of 2010. Please review the information under “Publish With Us” at Nimble Books and then use the Contact form to send me a proposal.
Topics? I’m open to anything, but I am particularly excited (right now) about cosmology, dark energy, the search for exoplanets, and anything that I post about on Twitter under the hashtag #science. I would also like to take advantage of the publishing forum to help move science policy in a good direction.
